At approximately 11:38 AM EST on March 10, 2008, long time environmental activist and community organizer Marie Mason was arrested by federal agents. Marie has been harassed (she has been raided by federal agents in the past) by the FBI for over a year, repeatedly refusing their requests to discuss Midwest ELF actions. She is currently being held in Butler County jail (southwestern Ohio) pending transfer to Michigan, and her charges remain unknown. The Sep 6 support rally has been canceled. According to sources, the DA dropped the order to appear when it became apparent that the people subpoenaed would not cooperate and take the 5th. We plan an information meeting in the next 2 weeks.
It has just been made public that two people have been ordered to appear (subpoenaed) before a MN Grand Jury on Sept 6. They are, Anthony Wong and Brandon Elder. (UPDATE: There is a 3rd subpoena, though the identity of the person has not yet been made public.) More info here. It appears that neither is cooperating. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of snitch Ian Wallace, who is known to be cooperating with federal authorities. Picture of the snitch is here.
Grand juries are the first step in sending down indictments- you are not allowed to have a lawyer present inside the room at a grand jury, and can be kept in jail for months at a time for refusing to testify.
If you know ANYONE who has been subpoenaed, or have heard anything about the situation, please share that information. There is nothing to be gained by keeping quiet, and a lot of people’s safety, comfort and freedom are on the line.
If you are approached by authorities, know that you DO NOT have to say anything, and that there are people and lawyers ready to support you. Even the most seemingly-innocuous statements can have negative effects and answering questions only opens you up to further harassment.
